swarajya garu,

really u should read the book to enjoy the nuances of English prose. Sometimes it is almost lyrical.

DSampath garu,

It is indeed a mystery to me as to how people achieve stardom not by virtue of their talents but by some strange factors like being in the right place at the right time. Substantivity unfortunately quite often doesn't get the due recognition. I've seen in my life some brilliant people fall by the wayside and mediocres rise to dizzy heights.
Strange is this world.
Hope ur post operative treatment has gone off well and u will be back on the blogspace with full verve.
Wishing U all the best,
Ramarao.

pbs garu,

VMT for ur comment. If u get time, read that book. He is one of the best authors of today's India.
Also see the poor response for a book review. I wonder whether the apathy for this type of blogs is due to my name or the lack of interest in good books.

Amitav Ghosh must be a versatile writer as his background shows. Thanks for a good book review. You have projected the beauty of Sunderbans and kindled the desire in us to visit such a wonderful place of West Bengal.I too was impressed by the quotes from the book , especially on tragedy of a routinely spent life.I feel that you have introduced a very good book to Sulekhites.I may like to read "Hungry Tide" to get the taste of a visiting professor of Harvard.

“The true tragedy of a routinely spent life is that its wastefulness does not become apparent till it is too late.”

Nice lines!

Excellent review, OMBTS!!!!
