My dear Ranjini,

Some of us have an uncanny skill of looking at a gift horse in its mouth. Those people who made the snide comments do not deserve any gifts. U have taken the better alternative. Next time when u visit India go to some institution and donate money and take a proper receipt. U also tell the children the purpose for which u r giving the gift and the amount u r giving so that they can demand for it later.
Once bitten twice shy.
Meanwhile I suggest that the local community of ur town raise funds, adopt a village and send it to some recognised NGO to build a school or primary Health Centre ot instal some bore wells etc. Ask them to submit the accounts and photos to show the progress of the work. there are some charlatans also running the NGOs. Or send it to ur local Rotary club. But if each one of us helps to lift one fellow above the poverty line we would eradicate poverty from our country in a couple of years..They will appreciate so much. Dont waste ur precious money for giving gifts to Gods. If they cannot look after themselves how can they look after us?
Thanks for ur comments.
Uncle.

I listed all the above activities not to blow my trumpet but to impress upon the members the pleasure of giving and to motivate them to undertake similar schemes whenever possible and contribute whatever little they can.  RamaRaoji....it is said that when you do charity with your right hand, even the left hand should be unaware of it. I believed in it earlier. Now I don't! Why? Simply because the world is not only deaf it is also blind and heartless. Unless such selfless acts are announced the attention of the callous ones never gets diverted. They continue to bask in their selfish cocoons and continue to take take and take. This way at least you can remind them of the pleasures of giving. Truly a wonderful blog and believe me it has absolutely no strains of blowing one's own trumpet. I'm impressed! Btw....I liked the Nike way in which you ended your blog. A gentle reminder that is pronounced quite forcefully.

Dear Uncle,

Very generous of you to write about virtues of giving. Whenever we go to India, we do the same. We take gifts and help generously with cash whenever needed. In recent years though, we were surprised when a couple of well-to-do (relatives included) in India looked down on gifts that we had chosen with great love and carried so far. They chided and made sarcastic comments that may be these were purchased at a 99 cent store etc. It was shocking especially because all of the gifts were expensive and actually chosen from speciality stores here. I later learned that this has happened to a few other friends from USA too. It appeared to be a weird trend!  That goes very much against what we all were taught in our religious and cultural upbringing.  A gift is supposed to be cherished because of the thought that goes behind it. But the thought that highly educated Indians would stoop to that level was a bit surprising.  The same gifts were highly appreciated by many who benefited from it or just felt a sense of gratitude.  It was an eyeopening experience. This time, I just opted for orphanages and rural schools for my donations and gifts. There is a certain joy in giving to those who have never received before.

Dear wiskyd garu,

I didn't mention some major chemes we undertook for fear of getting accused of propaganda but our Rotary Club has dome some wonders.

However one need not be a Rotarian to to do all this. being humane is enough.

Thanx for ur comments.

Ramarao.

Dear Rama Rao garu,

My heartfelt appreciation for all the wonderful work that you have been doing. You make it sound simple but it takes a large heart to do what you do. You are right about the joy of giving and the nice feeling one experiences when the recipient expresses their happiness.
